Swimming carnival

When I was in grade seven and my sister was in grade ten and it was the last year we were at school together my sister was in the swimming carnival she jumped in and she started swimming and they blew the whistle again for a false start and my sister didn’t hear she just kept swimming and finally someone jumped in the pool to tell her to stop and I can’t remember who but I think his surname was Latham and I thought he was her hero but he said ‘stop swimming you fucking idiot’ or something along those lines and what is sad about this story is my sister thought she was swimming the race of her life she thought I am going to win and I just remembered that.

Hi Penni, I have followed your blog and exciting career! I was there. You describe the event perfectly, and I can see it like a short film that has been stamped into the fatty tissue of my brain. I recall the initial whooping and how your sister continued down the pool, oblivious to the teachers’ efforts, and (wrongly) drawing inspiration from the crowd. Then the mood changed. There was silence, then respectful applause as she left the water, and then a new silence as she physically reacted to the news given by the phys ed teacher. It was one of the most edifying experiences of my youth. I have thought about this occasion at least once a year ever since, and I still do not understand what really happened.

    *laughs at own joke.
*secretly wishes Princess Mary was her stalker.

Sorry, Penni, not Princess Mary, but Matt R from the bus stop at the top of the hill. (I guess I should have an online identity.) The event was one of the very few that I have witnessed that was 'movie-like'.
