Hmm...

"The voice in my head tells me not to do it, but I'm going to do it anyway." Fred, aged 4, out of the blue in the car.

Maybe she's being haunted.

  1. Don't we all have voices in our heads?

The Hindu Vedas discussed this phenomenon - you can observe yourself - "I am moving my leg".

    Who is doing the observing?

Also, I don't know about anyone else, but I quite often find myself talking to myself. Whether you do that out loud or in your head - it's still yourself talking to yourself, which is thoroughly weird when you think about it, in the who is talking to whom sense, and which also can constitute a voice in your head.

I'd say Fred is probably talking to another aspect of Fred. She may grow up to be a philosopher.

  3. That was me. I didn't mean to delete the whole comment, just wanted to fix a typo. Duh. Anyway, what I wrote was that it's probably part of her superego. Perhaps a tad disconcerting that she's learning to ignore her conscience at such an early age! She's doing well to even have a voice of reason (if that's what it is) at four years old. Mieke certainly doesn't.

  5. Yeah, children and saying weird stuff seems pretty common. Apparently when I was about three I used to tell my mother I wished I was dead, which used to scare the shit out of her. In reality I think I probably had a poor understanding of mortality and an excellent understanding of how to get a reaction.

People also believe that children can see 'other' beings and such. Some religions say that we share the earth with beings that we can't see, such as the djinn, fairies, etc. It freaks me out a bit, the idea.

  7. I'm with Rebekka.

But I talk to myself all the time. I try not to do it in front of other people, in order to avoid being committed.

Apparently, my dad was exactly the same.

Anyway, the kid's profound. She just managed to state the Human Condition in one sentence flat.
